Automation, Control and Electrical (ACE) are well established considerations for owners and users of industrial assets.

From plant start up to shut down, ACE systems are found in virtually every operational process. From the alarm system and control desk, to emissions monitoring and on-line analysers, organisations are increasingly reliant on them, bringing the importance of their maintenance and reliability into sharp focus. Frequently updated regulations and constantly evolving ‘best practice’ are also a key part of the ACE landscape. EEMUA members benefit from sharing technical experience on emerging technologies, regulatory visits, effective working practices and equipment faults or failures. EEMUA enables members to stay abreast of new and revised standards and to help shape those standards as they develop. Individuals from member companies sit on standards bodies to represent the wider EEMUA membership and all members have the opportunity to provide input to this.

EEMUA also strongly encourages its members to share details of all types of safety incidents and also the lessons learned. For major issues, EEMUA works to develop a common member view that can be used to provide input to the safety related work that typically arises from major incidents, such as the 2005 Buncefield disaster, where a series of explosions and fires occurred at an oil storage facility in the south of the UK.

Technological advancements create continuous opportunities for more effective and efficient methods of automation, leading to an ever increasing focus on this area. EEMUA members benefit from sharing technical experience on automation and from a number of relevant publications such as EEMUA Publication 222: ‘Guide to the application of IEC 61511 to safety instrumented systems in the UK process industries’.

Control systems, along with their associated instrumentation, play a key role in maintaining high safety standards. As well as helping to manage risk on core hazards to personnel, control systems nowadays often supersede mechanical systems as functional safety solutions to ensure safe plant operation. EEMUA members benefit from sharing technical experience on control systems and from a number of relevant publications such as EEMUA Publication 191: ‘Alarm systems – a guide to design, management and procurement.’ and EEMUA Publication 222: ‘Guide to the application of IEC 61511 to safety instrumented systems in the UK process industries’.

EEMUA’s members benefit from a number of technical committees that meet regularly to collaborate on electrical related topics, with the main focus through the Electrical Committee (ELC). EEMUA also played a key part in developing and continues to shape the CompEx scheme. This unique scheme provides candidates with essential knowledge and practical skills to enable safe working in potentially explosive atmospheres and is supported by EEMUA Publication 186, ‘A Practitioner’s Handbook for potentially explosive atmospheres.’
