EEMUA is pleased to announce that the winner of its inaugural “Early Years Industry Award” is Matty Smith of Phillips 66.
The Award recognises the efforts of new starters within the engineering field in EEMUA Member companies.
Matty was a convincing candidate against a strong field of EEMUA Member nominees. The award committee were impressed by his early career achievement and his strong emphasis on not only his own personnel development but in supporting his organisation and the next generation of engineers in his local community through his STEM engagement. Matty’s application demonstrated the importance placed on innovation within Phillips 66 on sustainability of their operations via their "Fuelling the future" initiative to address the rapidly changing market conditions facing the Humber refinery and environmental pressures associated with climate change, whilst maintaining engagement of workforce and community.
The committee in making their decision recognised that there was clear alignment between Matty’s application, Phillips 66 operating philosophy and EEMUA’s core values of enabling the sharing of members’ experiences to develop good and best practice and promote a skilled and competent workforce.
On receiving the Award last night from EEMUA Council Chair Stuart Turner, Matty said: “The EEMUA Early Years Award was a great opportunity for me to showcase some of my key achievements in this early stage of my career. I’m very honoured to be announced the winner. The recognition has improved my confidence in my own ability and I aim to use that to further my progression in the future.”
Stuart commented: “It has been a pleasure to present EEMUA’s inaugural award for new starters in engineering to Matty who has shown clear alignment with the core values which make EEMUA an organisation which I am proud to be a part of. I would like to thank all those who took the time and effort to enter the competition, providing the award committee the challenging task of deciding which entry would eventually win. This is the first time in contemporary history where EEMUA have awarded such an award and I look forward to seeing and hearing from Matty during his tenure on the Council, where I’m sure he will bring the kind of ideas and innovation which he demonstrated in his submission.
Steve Wilkinson, Phillips 66 representative on EEMUA Council, added: “Phillips 66 are proud that one of their young engineers has won the inaugural Early Years Industry Award; Matty is a skilled, motivated and professional young engineer. As well as being technically competent he demonstrates values and behaviours, such as safety, honour and commitment, which are in close alignment with that of Phillips 66. He is a pleasure to have in the team and will no doubt go on to have a successful engineering career.”
Matty receives a £1,500 cash prize, along with a seat on the EEMUA Council for 12 months, effectively becoming an “EEMUA ambassador”, promoting the wider industry (and the organisation).
