Mark Boult
Mark is highly experienced in providing risk management and analysis support to clients in the energy, chemical and petrochemicals, offshore oil and gas, maritime, utility, healthcare and transport industries. He has held a range of management and consulting positions during a career of over 30 years in DNV GL. He has international experience and has worked in six of DNV GL’s offices around the world.
Mark was the Manager of the Technical Investigation for the Longford Royal Commission into the Fire and Explosion that occurred in September 1998 at Esso Facility in Longford, Victoria, Australia.
In addition to leading and developing business for DNV GL, Mark has been involved in the development of new and innovative services and solutions for DNV’s clients. This has included input to the development of DNV’s risk management software products, DNV’s ERM (enterprise risk management) services (including working with boards and management teams on their strategic risks), customising management systems solutions, asset management services (RBI and ARM), risk communications, and supporting ship classification activities with risk input.
Andy Brazier
Andy Brazier is a Chemical Engineer who has over 20 years experience as a human factors consultant in the major hazard industries including oil, gas, chemicals and power. His clients have included Shell, BP, Centrica, SSE, and Syngenta. Andy is currently working with EEMUA as an Associate Consultant for Wilde Analysis. He presents the one day course on EEMUA 191 alarm systems management and has recently rewritten EEMUA 201 on control room design (due to be published 2019).
Nic Butcher
Nic is a Chartered Chemical Engineer who has worked as a Specialist Inspector for HSE in the major hazards industries for 10 years. Main roles include inspection of COMAH regulated sites and investigation of incidents covering functional safety, control systems, cyber security and electrical ignition hazards.
Prior to HSE, Nic had an industrial background working as a Control System Design, Installation and Commissioning Engineer for a leading control system vendor working on projects in the chemical, oil and gas and other related sectors. He has also worked for a major bulk chemical manufacturing company on improvement projects for control and safety systems and for the Environment Agency.
Alan Cheung
Alan has been instrumental in the development and implementation of the Costain Behavioural Safety (CBS) Programme, which began in 2006. In 2011 he successfully took the CBS Programme through third party accreditation with the Cambridge Center for Behavioral Studies, making CBS the first third party accredited behavioural safety programme in the UK. In 2018 CBS was re-accredited for the second time and became one of only two programmes to achieve Platinum Status.
He subsequently developed a Behavioural Management Consultancy for Costain which helps clients apply the principles of behavioural science to improve all aspects of their business.
Costain is a smart infrastructure solutions company, based in the UK, whose purpose is to improve people's lives by deploying technology-based solutions to meet urgent national needs across the UK's energy, water and transportation infrastructures.
Mark Cooper
Mark is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer and Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. He has held senior positions in the Power Industry and was instrumental in establishing the Generators Safety and Integrity Programme, a cross-industry group setting good practice in the management of process safety risks, and previously chaired its Pressure Systems Working Group and its Management Board.
Mark now works as an engineering consultant. He is Chair of the User Inspectorates Committee and the High Temperature Hydrogen Attack Forum in EEMUA.
Jon De Main
After graduating with an engineering degree in Electrical and Information Sciences. John joined ICI on Teesside, and has continued to work for the same business through ownership by Huntsman and now SABIC. His work in this business has included control system programming, instrument and electrical plant support engineer, projects engineer (including commissioning of the world’s largest single stream LDPE plant) and support of the entire UK organisation as a technical engineer.
John's current role is as technical lead in the instrument and electrical disciplines for SABIC UK, including defining the company management system and engineering standards.
Robin Essenius
Robin’s career within the storage tanks industry spans almost 20 years. After playing an important role in building a company which specialised in products for storage tanks, he pursued a new challenge and continued his career at Vopak, where he was responsible for the maintenance of storage tanks in all terminals in the Netherlands.
This was followed with a role in the Global Operations Department, where he was globally active in tank maintenance for Vopak and responsible for international implementation of risk based maintenance systems on equipment for Vopak terminals worldwide.
Robin has now re-joined CTS Group as COO, responsible for its worldwide operation.
During the last 4 years, Robin has been a member of the EEMUA Storage Tank Committee and Chairman of Working Group 102, which updates EEMUA 159.
David Glass
David is a Principal Specialist Inspector with HSE, and head of a team of professional Mechanical Engineers within the Chemical, Explosives and Microbiological Hazards Division who are responsible for managing research, informing policy and issues relating to onshore Asset Integrity. In addition, David and the team visit various hazardous installations throughout the UK, scrutinising arrangements for integrity management, maintenance and other mechanical engineering issues. Prior to joining HSE in 2005, David worked for fifteen years for multi-national companies in the batch chemical industry, at locations in the UK and USA.
Carole Goodson
Carole has worked in the electricity generation sector for almost 20 years, with over 12 years working for RWE. Experience supporting generation assets in the field of process systems has led Carole to the team developing and managing cyber security for the protection of operational technology at RWE’s generating assets. Recently RWE Generation has undertaken a UK Government sponsored audit of cyber security on critical national infrastructure, where Carole was part of a small team responding to the audit.
John Harris
John is a time served Electrician and spent over 10 years on various sites working in Hazardous areas.
For the last 14 years he has worked for JTL/JT Limited as part of the CompEx team.
CompEx is the recognised global scheme for the protection of oil, gas and chemical workers in both offshore and onshore activities. The scheme assesses the competency of employees and contract staff who are working in environments with the potential risk of explosive atmospheres. Developed by the EEMUA and JT Limited, the CompEx Certification Body is accredited by UKAS to ISO/IEC 17024 : 2012
John’s role as part of this team is to manage the external quality assurance of the Licensed Centres, develop existing and new products and manage the Ex11 Mechanical module.
The Ex11 module determines the core competency of mechanical practitioners working in explosive atmospheres. It follows a syllabus to enable safe working practices for the international standard ISO 80079 Parts 36 and 37 and allows employers to benchmark the core competency requirements of both their staff and sub-contractors.
Gary Holcroft
After working in industry for 32 years Gary Holcroft joined HSE in February 2015 within the Chemicals Explosives and Microbiological Hazard Division as a Special Inspector of Health and Safety. Gary is based at the HSE Head Office in Bootle, and is a Chartered Electrical Engineering with responsibilities covering the whole of the UK.
Matthew Jessop
Matthew graduated as a Mechanical Engineer in 1992.
He began his working career with ICI at their Runcorn site (later INEOS), the UK’s largest manufacturer of chlorine and chlorine derivative bulk chemicals. Early positions included a range of project and mechanical asset engineering roles, all with high exposure to rotating equipment. His final role was 5 years in a central engineering team as the Rotating Equipment Lead supporting all operating assets to maintain integrity and improve reliability. This included providing rotating equipment support for the design, build and commissioning of a new ‘world class’ sized chlorine manufacturing plant including ~150 new items of rotating equipment.
In 2008 Matthew moved to work for Shell Oil Uk Ltd at their Stanlow Refinery (now Essar), one of the UK’s largest refineries. His current position, as the ‘Rotating Equipment and Reliability Team Leader’, involves managing a team of 8 engineers supporting the refinery’s fleet of rotating equipment and leading the reliability improvement process.
Alex Lewis
Director at Unleash & Engage, Alex is a global transformation expert. He has successfully led large scale culture change, operational excellence and organisational design and development programmes at blue chip companies including Tata, Airbus and St Gobain. As former HR Director at BAE systems, Alex has over 30 years’ experience, working with businesses to deliver sustainable business improvement.
Jim Lewis
Jim joined Calor in 2010 and manages the engineering function supporting import terminal, cylinder filling and bulk distribution sites, all COMAH installations. Sustaining and improving industrial assets to ensure safe and profitable operation has been the focus of Jim's career, drawing on his experience in asset integrity, reliability improvement, maintenance optimisation, project delivery and process safety.
After graduating Jim built flour mills but was drawn to the complexity of the chemical industry and held senior engineering roles with ICI, DuPont and Invista.
Simon Mann
Simon has worked in the chemical and petrochemical industry for over 25 years, in a variety of roles across maintenance, engineering and projects. In recent years he has been site leader for asset integrity management systems, engineering standards and competence management.
Clifford Matthews
Cliff has 40 years’ experience in engineering. He has worked as a marine engineer, mechanical inspection engineer and has extensive experience in failure investigations, insurance claim work and expert witness work on pressure systems and rotating plant. He also ran his own training company for 15 years and now works for Wilkinson Coutts Engineering Training writing and presenting Pressure Systems training courses.
Oliver Mullan
A Chartered Chemical Engineer and Project Professional working in the major hazard industries of Chemicals, Speciality Chemicals and Steelmaking for the past 15 years. Head of Capital Projects and Design Function for the Tata Steel Strip Products UK business. Responsible for the Project, Program and Portfolio Management and the Design Services for the largest integrated Steel Works in the UK, Port Talbot and also covering Llanwern Steelworks (Hot and cold rolled strip and galvanised coil) in Newport, and the Shapfell limestone quarry and lime kilns, located in Cumbria.
Over the last 3 years have led successful change programs on the development and use of Portfolio Management and Project Controls systems.
Carolyn Nicholls
Carolyn is an MIChemE Professional Process Safety Engineer, and has been in the risk and hazard management industry for over ten years. She leads the RAS team of risk and hazard management consultants and has been instrumental in creating the company’s assessment methodologies. Carolyn has experience of working with UK COMAH sites to develop safety reports and provide support in all aspects of risk management, in particular consequence analysis and risk assessment, and evaluating the economic impact of improvement measures. Working in the areas of safety to people and environment equally.
Adam Potter
Adam has worked in the high hazard process sector since graduating in 1995. His experience includes the mechanical design of piping and vessels at ICI. He has also been the responsible mechanical engineer on top tier COMAH sites and carrying out fitness for purpose assessments including corrosion, local thinned areas, fatigue, creep and evaluating tolerable flaw sizes to recognised industry codes. As co-founder of Axiom Engineering Associates Adam heads up the Inspection services offering. Axiom work for owners of high hazard process plant in the UK and abroad.
David Thomas
Dave is a Chartered Engineer with proven abilities in Production Engineering, Quality Engineering, Project Management and System Safety.
Started his career as a technical apprentice in local industry manufacturing heavy printing and paper converting machinery. He achieved his HNC in production engineering and rose through the business to become the chief production engineer and Quality focal point for manufacturing.
After twenty years in this business, his career took another path briefly into manufacturing components for Airbus as technical manager of Wilsons Engineering before deciding to join the MoD.
Since 2001, Dave has gained experience and promotion through the Land domain commencing this element of his career as interfaces engineer on Trojan and Titan tracked vehicles, a period spent procuring Wolfhound tactical support vehicle for urgent operations in Afghanistan before becoming Chief Engineer for the in-service support and Vehicle Demo and Manufacture teams. He now resides in QSEP as QCM Pol Dep Hd, fulfilling his choice to return to the field of Quality at the highest level.
Ian Travers
Ian has over twenty five years’ experience in the regulation of chemical and major hazard industries and in the investigation of major incidents to discover the underlying causes. He is an expert on process safety management, leadership and the establishment and implementation of key performance indicators for major hazard industries. He holds the Institute of Chemical Engineers’ Franklin Medal for his outstanding contribution to Process Safety.
Ian has a unique insight to how HSE, verifies risk management systems in the chemicals, oils, gas and other major hazard industries. Since 2015 working in the private sector Ian has worked with companies in the energy, chemicals and fuel sector to improve their risk management and asset integrity. This work has helped these enterprises focus on the most important and most vulnerable aspects of their risk management systems to ensure that they obtain exemplary levels of assurance that measures to prevent a major incident are delivering their intended outcomes. Ian has also worked closely with the World Bank on its economic and regulatory reform programs aimed at modernising the regulation of industrial and occupational risk in countries such as Moldova, Cameroon, Azerbaijan and Greece.
Stuart Turner
Stuart sits as one of the EEMUA non executive directors and currently works for BOC acting as Leading engineer pressure systems for the onsites business. He holds numerous Technical Authority roles within the business and has experience of deployment of drone inspections on industrial plant and equipment within the industrial gasses, power and oil/gas industries. Stuart is responsible for the development of asset integrity strategies for BOC OnSites to ensure safe, reliable and efficient operation of equipment operating in cryogenic, normal and high temperature applications.
Ian Watson
Ian is a metal-basher (metallurgist) by degree and joined E.ON in 2007 as an Asset Integrity Engineer, specialising in the inspection, life/defect assessment and incident investigation of power plant components on gas and coal-fired power plants in the UK, Europe and Russia. In 2013, he moved into Global Asset Risk Management role, initially supporting E.ON’s Spanish power plants with risk-based CAPEX prioritisation, adoption of a new Risk Management Framework (including Bowties) and a European-wide review of plant preservation techniques. Later, he moved into a leadership role at Uniper, with responsibility for delivering Asset Risk Management and Project Prioritisation processes for the European Fossil and Hydro fleets. Ian re-joined E.ON in 2016, where he has overseen the introduction of a process safety culture within a retail environment with a diverse and dynamic asset portfolio increasingly dominated by small-scale distributed generation and network-enabled consumer devices for SMART and Internet of Things integration.
