Modern equipment offers a multitude of possibilities, not only for control, but also for sensing its status and condition. The more data available, the harder it is to make the right decision – you have to work really hard to identify what really matters. What an equipment manufacturer may regard as an important alarm may be totally insignificant for the safety of a plant or control of its processes. It just makes it harder to spot the real problems early enough and to take the necessary corrective actions. Pity the poor control room operator who gets all this data raw and doesn’t know where to look for the few items of vital data when the alarms start flooding in. He then has no time to think and act appropriately. Quality filtering, preparation and presentation are the keys to safe and efficient operations. Essential enablers for this are presenting data on graphics to give early indications of issues and reduce reliance on alarms. Also, improved working arrangements in control rooms so that operators are more able to handle data and act appropriately.
