Risk Based Inspection (RBI). Traditionally, plant has been examined at fixed intervals according to equipment type. This approach is not able to take account of good operating experience. Risk based inspection is the process of developing an inspection plan sometimes called a Written Scheme of Examination based on knowledge of an asset in its operating context. How it operates, how it may deteriorate, what the failure scenarios may be due to flaws damage, deterioration or degradation i.e. the consequences and the likelihood of these occurring over the lifecycle of the asset. Goal-setting legislation, such as the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 (PSSR) and the Control of Major Accident Hazard (COMAH) regulations, allows for inspection strategies based on risk, which focus inspection resources where they will have the greatest benefit.
