EEMUA is supporting International Women in Engineering Day on 23 June 2021, which this year has the theme ‘Engineering Heroes’. We are pleased to be celebrating the amazing work that women engineers around the world are doing to support lives and livelihoods every day, not least in responding to the global pandemic over the past 18 months.
Join us throughout the week of 21-25 June when we will be running a programme of activities exploring how women engineers involved with EEMUA came to choose engineering as a career and sharing some of their experiences of working in engineering. We hope their stories will help inspire many more young girls and women to consider engineering as a career.
On Monday (21 June) we will be showcasing a video from EEMUA Associate Company RAS featuring its women engineers reflecting on what it means to them to be an engineer.
The following day (22 June) we will be sharing an article by our EEMUA colleague Kena Jolly in which she highlights the key influence on her decision to become a mechanical engineer, a career she initially never considered as being for her.
Women are often told they can be mothers and career women, and on International Women in Engineering Day (23 June), Katherine Asvegren of VPI, who has recently returned to work after maternity leave, will be sharing with us how it took a lot of support to make this happen for her, and a degree of luck!
On the Thursday (24 June), Sally Hawkins, one of EEMUA’s MIPC course tutors, will be looking back over a nearly forty-year career, sharing thoughts on representation of women in the workplace over that time, what she would do differently now, and what makes a good leader – not just for women.
On the last day (25 June), Joanna Snape, a graduate design engineer at EEMUA Member Company E-ON, will be reflecting on how her dream industrial placement at a makeup manufacturing company whilst studying for a Master’s in Chemical Engineering sparked her interest in sustainable energy solutions.
