This course is positioned at the awareness/introductory level and is an optional precursor to working through EEMUA Publication 201 - Control rooms: a guide to their specification, design, commissioning and operation. Its content, however, is relevant to users who draw on other EEMUA publications, mainly EEMUA 191 , but also EEMUA 222. EEMUA provides e-learning training courses based on these publications in the areas of Alarm systems and Functional safety. On completion of the desktop version, immediate certification is provided for the registered user that launched or purchased the course.

The content of this course has been approved for Continuing Professional Development (CPD) by the Society of Operations Engineers (SOE), a Professional Engineering Institution licensed by the Engineering Council in the UK. Completing this e-learning module, including the test at the end, is equivalent to 60 minutes of CPD.

The Control Rooms e-learning module provides guidance to engineers and the wider teams involved in the design of control rooms, control desks and consoles. It will help during new-build and modification projects, as well as evaluating existing set ups where people operate industrial processes and activities on facilities such as chemical plants, power stations and oil refineries.

The course covers:

  • Designing a control building and sizing a control room.

  • Good practice in control room design.

  • Upgrading control rooms and how to manage change.

  • Factors in the design and layout of control consoles.

  • Considerations for Human machine interface (HMI) design.

  • Managing access to the HMI from outside the control room.

  • Ensuring appropriate training and personnel competence.

  • Meeting maintenance and security requirements.

The module will benefit anyone with an interest in process plant control rooms and control desks using Human machine interfaces. It is especially relevant to control engineers, control room console (and HMI) designers and vendors, control room operators, engineering consultants, engineering contractors, engineering managers, facilities managers, graduate engineers, plant operations managers, process safety managers, SCADA engineers and systems support managers.

Either completing (but not passing) or passing this e-learning course has no bearing on entry into the EEMUA-supported Alarm Systems training course, but you may choose to take this as a natural progression.

This 60-minute e-learning course is best viewed on a desktop computer that uses the latest version of one of the main web browsers and has a reliable broadband internet connection. A mobile app version for EEMUA Corporate Members, which provides both online and offline options for taking the course, is available for Android and iOS devices. Access details are provided by email on registration for the course.

Note: If you need to save or print your e-learning certificate, please remember to do this whilst you are in the course after the test.
