EEMUA is pleased to announce that the winner of our Early Years Industry Award 2022 is Megan Backhouse, a Project Engineer at BOC UK & Ireland.

The award recognises the efforts of new starters within the engineering field in our member companies, demonstrating their communication skills, engineering application and leadership in their specific specialism. It is a great opportunity to celebrate the next face of engineering.

On receiving the award Megan said: “It is a real honour to receive this award from EEMUA and to be recognised for what I have achieved. It has improved my confidence in my own ability, and I would like to thank everyone at BOC who has helped in my development. I am really looking forward to the opportunity to work more closely with EEMUA over the next 12 months and benefit from the breadth of experience of its members”.*

The EEMUA Awards Committee were impressed with Megan’s application, which demonstrated great achievement and innovation with her involvement and key role in developing BOC’s hydrogen skid and nitrogen generating turbine system for industrial users.

Jim Lewis, Director of Central Engineering at BOC commented: “We have a talented engineering team at BOC and I am proud to have one of our younger members recognised in this way by EEMUA. It is a great opportunity to showcase their skills and winning provides a fantastic opportunity for Megan to build her network. Congratulations to Megan and all the other candidates who entered”.

In recognition of the high quality of entries this year, joint ‘runners-up’ awards are presented to two highly commended applicants, William Hawthorne of BP and Jack Waddell of Shell. William demonstrated very strong individual achievements and leadership in his material selection project for pipeline maintenance devices and has made a significant improvement in the performance and life of this equipment. Jack demonstrated fantastic leadership and tenacity with progressing the planned installation of a solar farm to power his site and showed great autonomy and drive whilst involving others where necessary in the process at different stages.

Stuart Turner Award

Congratulations to Philip Enegela of INEOS O&P Europe, the recipient of this year’s Stuart Turner Award.

Established in 2021 to honour the memory of Stuart Turner, an enthusiastic advocate for all things EEMUA, the award recognises an employee of a member organisation who has made a significant contribution to EEMUA.

Philip has been heavily involved with EEMUA over the last few years, being active in multiple technical committees and forums. He is currently a key member of the EEMUA working group contributing to a new publication on defined life repairs. Philip has spoken at multiple EEMUA seminars and presented on behalf of EEMUA an AMPP (formally NACE) webinar on corrosion under insulation assessment, monitoring and management – recorded by AMPP as its highest attendance for a webinar at the time.

Stephen Newton, Inspection and Integrity Manager, INEOS Grangemouth O&P UK, commented: “Philip is always committed in knowledge sharing and working with others to drive improvements across many engineering disciplines. INEOS is extremely pleased that the contribution he has made to the industry has been recognised in this way by EEMUA”.

The winners and runners-up were announced at the EEMUA Awards 2022 Dinner in London on 16 November.

The standard of entries was again very high and EEMUA would like to thank all those who took the time and effort to enter.

* Megan receives a £1,500 cash prize, along with a seat on the EEMUA Council for 12 months, effectively becoming an “EEMUA ambassador”, promoting the wider industry (and the organisation).
