Presentation title: Investigating Internal Corrosion: Three Industrial Case Studies
Presentation abstract/summary: Identifying a corrosion mechanism is often only the first step in a failure investigation. Establishing why the damage occurred may require a broader review of inspection history, operating conditions, process chemistry, water treatment and possible contamination routes. This presentation discusses three practical failure investigations involving internal corrosion of industrial equipment and piping. The first case concerns severe localised damage in carbon steel boiler tubes and the wider investigation needed to explain its onset. The second examines cracking in stainless steel steam equipment, this was not expected under the service conditions. The third explores unexpectedly rapid degradation of a stainless-steel dosing line in a service environment that would normally be considered compatible with the selected material. Each case illustrates how evidence from laboratory examinations, operating data and process history was combined to move from the observed damage to its underlying cause.
