Introduction

Pipeline operators face different corrosion-management challenges depending on the configuration and operational status of an asset. This webinar will present two separate applications of Volatile Corrosion Inhibitor technology: preservation of the annular space at a cased pipeline crossing and internal preservation of an unused cross-country pipeline.

The first case study will examine corrosion control within the annular space between a carrier pipeline and its external casing. It will review the corrosion risks associated with water, moisture and contaminants entering the annulus; assessment and preparation of the annular space; casing-end sealing; inhibitor application; and the use of Electrical Resistance probes to monitor conditions within the treated annulus. This application is independent of internal pipeline preservation and does not involve treating the inside of the carrier pipeline.

The second case study will address internal preservation of an unused cross-country pipeline. It will discuss cleaning and preparation, selection of a suitable inhibitor-delivery method, distribution of VCI through pigging and controlled fogging, treatment of individual pipeline sections, management of low points and residual moisture, and maintaining the required containment during the preservation period. Monitoring and inspection options for confirming preservation effectiveness will also be considered.

The presentation will compare the engineering objectives, delivery methods, design considerations and monitoring requirements for these two distinct applications. Practical limitations, field observations and lessons learned will be discussed to support the selection and implementation of an appropriate corrosion-control strategy.

Key learning outcomes:
  • Understand corrosion risks within a pipeline casing annulus.
  • Review VCI application and monitoring methods for cased crossings.
  • Understand the requirements for internal preservation of an unused pipeline.
  • Review the use of pigging and fogging to distribute VCI internally.
  • Recognise the importance of preparation, moisture management, containment and monitoring.
  • Identify the differences between annular-space treatment and internal pipeline preservation.
