Guest Speaker:  Eddie 'The Eagle' Edwards

We’re honoured to welcome Eddie 'The Eagle' Edwards who is one of Britain’s most recognisable sporting personalities and a remarkable example of what can happen when determination matters more than the odds.

Eddie became a household name at the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics, where he represented Great Britain in ski jumping. He arrived without the pedigree, funding or facilities enjoyed by his international rivals, but with something arguably more powerful: an absolute refusal to give up.

His journey to the Olympics was anything but conventional. With limited financial backing, Eddie funded his own training, borrowed and improvised equipment, and travelled across Europe in pursuit of the qualification he needed to compete. He was never expected to challenge for a medal. In fact, almost everything about the established sporting system suggested he shouldn't have been there at all.

But Eddie made it.

His fearless performances in Calgary captured the imagination of millions around the world. While others were celebrated for winning, Eddie became famous for having the courage to compete in the first place. His infectious personality and extraordinary persistence turned him into an unlikely international star and created a sporting story that has endured for decades.

Hollywood eventually came calling, with his life inspiring the hit film Eddie the Eagle, introducing his story to a new generation, and cementing his place in British popular culture.

Yet behind the famous glasses and underdog image is a powerful story about ambition, resilience, and approaching setbacks differently. Eddie's success came from setting his own definition of achievement, finding ways around obstacles, and continuing when conventional wisdom told him to stop.

Entertaining, uplifting and refreshingly down-to-earth, Eddie reminds audiences that success isn't always about finishing first. Sometimes it's about having the courage to start, the resilience to keep going and the determination to prove that seemingly impossible goals might not be quite so impossible after all.
